The challenge
An Amazon seller had a confusing history of VAT balances, payments and charges after changing providers. The seller believed a historic payment had already been made, while HMRC’s records still showed an outstanding liability.
What we did
Our team put together a period-by-period schedule and requested bank statements and payment references. We followed the payment trail with HMRC, including an incorrect reference, a returned cheque and an underlying tax liability that still needed to be settled.
We worked with the seller to bring the VAT position up to date, secured an initial waiver for one historic period, then pursued the wider surcharge appeal and answered HMRC’s follow-up questions.
The result
The appeal concluded with all surcharges waived. A small interest balance remained payable. The waiver did not remove the underlying VAT liability.
Our team subsequently filed the next outstanding quarterly return.
The takeaway
A clear history of liabilities, payments and references helped resolve this historic case. Keeping those records together is particularly useful when changing advisers or providers.
This case describes a historic surcharge appeal and is not a guide to current VAT penalty rules.
